Herniated discs put pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots. Because nerves are controlled by different parts of the body, the pressure can damage them and make them unable to carry signals. This can cause symptoms of muscle weakness and motor control loss. These symptoms can occur in one or both legs and can be caused by a herniated disc in either the neck or lumbar spine.
